Historically, Czechs have been recognized for their fine lacework, linen, embroidery, tapestry, indigo blueprint (“modrotisk”), and woven fabrics. Little has survived in the post-revolution period because government subsidies to factories and artisan workshops ceased and artisans could no longer survive in a market that demanded cheaper products. However, a few enterprising manufacturers are still practicing today and our textile journey to North and South Bohemia and Moravia allows you to experience these traditional techniques. Visits to museums housing historical pieces and a “skanzen” (outdoor folk museum) showing outstanding embroidery of national folk costumes and linens are included. You will also have the opportunity to create a textile piece using the blockprint method.
Through visits to museums and Czech fashion designer studios in Prague, you will also learn how contemporary artists have integrated traditional techniques into exciting fusions of tradition and modern designs. You will see how the patterns, colors, textures and rhythms of Prague’s amazing architectural form and environment have inspired these beautiful designs.
