Chile and professor Maclean’s book ‘Democracy in Chains’

Chile as a paradigmatic case of neoliberal state formation, where democracy coexists with deeply entrenched legal, economic, and territorial constraints that favor some and disempower others. The exemplary case of contemporary Chilean history relies on constitutional and legal changes that restrict popular sovereignty and power over resources and reduce formerly guaranteed social rights.

 A Laboratory for Extreme Neoliberalism and Privatization

Focused on Public Policies and Communication, the new program draws on Professor MacLean’s core lectures and TFS locations to visit and interact with relevant actors in recent constitutional history, public servants, extractive regions, and cultural heritage areas, exploring the fingerprints of the Chilean process throughout the history of its Republic and dominant classes, emphasizing its geography, political economy, ecology, migration, and everyday life.
